I got 14% on last weeks plant ID test, this weeks will be just as bad. Most people are getting way into the 70's%. I'm not very good at remembering things.

20 plant species a week is rather a lot to learn. Plus having other things on hasn't made it easy. Just don't know what to do. :-(

Are the others on your course already experienced or are they starting from scratch? It may be that they knew a lot of the stuff already so don't get disheartened. You'll catch up. Is there a study advice service you could go to for help? They may know some memorising techniques (and if they do can you let me know. I'm useless at remembering things as well).

Do you need to know the latin names or 'just' common names [which is hard enough!] from examples or photos of their bark, foliage and fruit? ... I found it hard to learn the latin ones until I could associate the genus name with the species- then for some reason it got easier [just need lots of practise- so, as Helen says, don't be discouraged]

More dreadful news!

On Friday night there was a fire in the building where we store our bikes for the disabled riding. All our bikes were trashed.

The sessions in Brixton are now off for the foreseeable future and I now have a third of my work hours cut. I have now signed off benefits for nothing and will have to re apply.

The worst thing is we had a good number of disabled users of our facility who will now be doing without.

The fire was started deliberately.

Tea please.

That's awful tdr1nka, any insurance on the building?

Is the group a registered charity?

If you set up something like a Just Giving fund I'd be willing to contribute something to kickstart an appeal.

Cheers Guys, the bikes were all insured but there was quite a variety, side by side trikes, hand cycles and wheel chair bikes, none are cheap or even easy to replace.
Also we now don't have anywhere to store any replacements.

Lots of the bikes were donated or bought from ebay and the cost of replacing them is prohibitive.

I'll get onto my boss about the donations idea.

Have to know the family, genus, species, var/cultivar and function. So everything really, can't get away with just knowing the common names unfortunately.

Sorry to hear about the fire tdr1nka, some sick person got a kick out of that. They are still trying to catch a serial arsonist here in York. His last act was breaking an outside gas line leading to a house and setting fire to it while people were asleep.
