Sindh Mung Dhal

250g yellow mung dal - split mung beans I think
4 chopped tomatoes
2 chopped green chillies
12 curry leaves - use more if using dried not fresh
1/4 teaspoon of turmeric
3/4 teaspoon of salt
1 tbsp of ground coriander
1 tbsp of lemon juice
pinch of Asafoetida - supposed to help with windage issues and does add a little flavour
2 tbsp butter or ghee - butter works fine but ghee does taste a bit better
1 tsp cumin seed
3 garlic cloves chopped

I think this serves four and would keep in the fridge most of the week I should think if freezer space is an issue. I make double or triple the amount and use more chillies as this is fairly mild I think and I don't do too hot.

Rinse and drain the mung beans and set to boil rapidly in 700ml of water, discard the froth with slotted spoon. Then simmer for half an hour. You might need to add a bit of water later on, see how it goes.

Cheers for that. I assume from the boiling and simmering that the mung beans are the raw dry sort?

We do have a good indian supermarket near work - sometimes we go and fetch samosas for lunch - they are on the edge of my heat tolerance, but good. I'll have to drop in and see what they have. I do have a proper Indian spice tin to keep stuff in.

Hmm, yes, a freezer. Ah! I was thinking this means a trip to one of the out of town places, but I might check out the Heart Foundation furniture and electrics shop first. Then I need to sweet talk Bikepete into bringing it round on his trailer and helping me carry it upstairs...

Put a pot of Longer's dhal on and send the aroma wafting downstairs? He'll be upstairs with the freezer in seconds!

Excellent idea!

Hell, I've got to go out for milk, and ought to make it a longer trip than across the road, so I might go and see if the shop is open today. If it comes to it, I can get a basic new freezer for £100, so not a huge outlay.

I'm finding with the full time work (what a chore!) that the quick nipping to the shop any time of day is the thing I'm missing - I can of course pop in on the way home, but with the dark evening commute, I so often just want to get home. With more bread in store, and some milk, I'd not have those to think about. I always have the makings of a decent meal in, in tins, but a freezer would give a bit more variety (and probably more veg!), and more scope to stock up on reduced stuff.

Right, I'm off out. See you all later!

Speaking of mung beans. I often sprout them for use as beansprouts. That way they are much, much cheaper than bought beansprouts and much fresher. It makes a huge difference to the taste.

While you are there, can you see if they have a red duffle coat? One with proper toggles etc, and not too long? Thank you

Yep, they're delicious. Don't they use pressure and do them in the dark to make the shop bought ones?

I do a mix of mung and aduki for salads and I reckon they're a superfood.

sorry for the shouting coming up but

I forgot to mention chucking in some fresh ginger with the tomatoes earlier.

Carry on

We got one!
Ali frame MTB, triple, fully adjustable as Miss t continues to rocket in height and just a hint of 'Specialzed Allez' to the frame dontcha think?

Sadly Miss t is just too tall for the largest of the girly styled kids bikes and we have had to forego a step thru frame with basket, flower pattern decals and 'seethru' coloured mudguards and has to be put on a plain but thoroughly practical MTB.

There was a moment of tears when I had to explain that they don't have pretty bikes in her size.
(The honest truth is she only just fits these sized bikes but in another 6 months they'd be past all useable adjustment.)

I think I cleverly got round this problem by saying that because the frame on this bike is almost entirely white, she can put her own stickers, basket and gubbins on it, also we can paint it to her own design.

It's such a shame it's tipping down with rain as we've only been able to ride the bike home now, stopping just to adjust the brake levers for her reach.
Given more time she'll get a lot of use out of this bike and it should last her a good year or two.

Miss t happy, mission accomplished I think I deserve a cuppa!!

Lovely looking bike Tdr1nka! As you say, she can customise it herself and I guess that her tastes could change pretty quickly and she'd hate being stuck with a girly, floral bike.

Yes, she could be a goth in 6 months....

Very nice! May she have many happy hours on it.

Well, I made it out in the brief non-rain window. The Heart Foundation shop was closed, so I'll go back next Saturday and see what they have.

No duffle coats I'm afraid....

Have you thought about putting a wanted ad on Freecycle? I got rid of my fridge and freezer that way.

I got my fridge freezer and cooker on freecycle.

Thanks for the comments on the bike, I'll let you know how it progresses.

I admit to feeling a bit jealous, I would have died for a bike like this at her age rather than the horrible cheese bike that I had.

Lovely bike TdInka, and as you say she can put her own design on it, and change the design fairly easily. I can imagine that "pink flowery" as a theme might be tricky to co-ordinate with one's own attire.

* thinks about yellow/red clashing with pink *.

Not that I know very much about co-ordination in colours.

I have three stickers on my FCR. One is a tiny flower on my seatpost, one is a Foska armadillo on the seat tube and the last...

It came as part of a set given away free with an MTB magazine, which we ended up buying for some reason. Once the FCR was set up, and Tom had cabled it, I was off on a Company of Cyclists holiday, which involved packing the bike in the van. It was only at the other end, when it was handed down to me, that I noticed that Tom had stuck this sticker on, at the bottom of the downtube, underneath, just where it meets the BB. The caption says "Girls (heart) Ponies" and there is a sillouette of a girl on a pony. On close inspection the pony appears to have 5 legs....:blush:
