Afternoons!

Went to see 'Avatar' last night - really enjoyed it. Tis a good film

Caller display is very useful if someone rings, and you are too busy to answer it at that particular moment.

Hmm. If she calls the flat and I'm not there, she tries my mobile, and after a surprised pause when I say "Hello mum" (yes, mum, it shows up who's calling), says "Ah! oh! You're out then are you?"

Bless her. If I didn't answer the mobile she'd leave a slightly panicy message... Mind you, these days she has more to talk about most weeks than I do - several different sets of friends she does classes with, or lunches with, and then there's the trail of little things that have happened since last week....

All us Archer women are the same. When I commented how well Oli's talking was coming in, David remarked that it was because although he (Oli) was only 2, he'd probably been exposed to 4 years worth of talking.

My Grandma didn't have a phone for ages - like me, she wasn't comfortable using one, and on high days and holidays, she and Grandpa went next door to a neighbour to call and say Happy Whatever. Then one day, my Mum got a letter from Grandma, and I remember her reading it and leaping up to the phone because the letter said that Gran had a) broken her wrist and got a phone installed....

I was Doing Things in the workshop. Got my Yellow Wheel laced up for my Yellow Bike and wired it all up. Rode it to work this morning.

Having an unexpected later start today, boss texted to say he had to fix a bike before going in.

Got on the scales before my shower, and after the customary wobble, there was just a couple of fag papers between the bottom end of the needle and the top end of the 10 stone mark. Mind you, last nights 'dinner' consisted of a pint, a bag of nuts and a packet of instant noodles in soup.

How many different and contradictory routes do you think you can plan in that time?

I was talking to a colleague yesterday. He's thinking of riding to Moscow, getting the trans-Siberian train to Vladivostock, then a boat to Japan to see his girlfriend, then another across to the States, and a Greyhound across the US. He talks about it all so casually...

I just stopped at the bakers for some lunchtime cake (what better way to celebrate weight loss?) and the cheery baker chappie, after some banter over whether I was going to eat both pieces myself (I'm not, one is for the boss), said "Ah you need to put on some weight....". Just the sort of calculated obviously nonsense remark guaranteed to have me feeling good all day!

Last night I was watching tv, two hours of Criminal Intent - yes I know, but I like it. It examines the motives and premeditation before crimes. Oh and Mr Vincent D'Onofrio is very very attractive a very good actor. He looks a bit lot like Spandex, but obviously older.

Then I had a shower. So much excitement - I could barely contain myself. Then I was on here for a bit, but only to catch up, as it were.

I have crossed Canada, by train, in the winter. A wonderful trip, in between doing temporary jobs. I have also travelled on a Greyhound. I must have been unlucky cos it was a terrible journey. The rest of the passengers had a very fragrant air about them, and most of them appeared to carry all their wordly goods with them. The Greyhound bus stations appeared to be planned in the worst part of each town. The (good) thing about it was seeing "small town America".

I've heard that in America, only the poor travel by bus, because they can't afford cars or to fly. And when Mum was in Canada, she wanted to go and explore Victoria, by catching the bus into town (she was staying some distance away with my aunt and uncle, and my aunt wasn't well so my uncle didn't want to leave her to drive Mum into town) and my uncle just wouldn't let her, with little explanation. It seemed to Mum that there was a big social distinction between using a bus to commute during the week or to and from the airport (ok), and using it for leisure (looked down on), that there simply isn't in the UK.

Fortunately it was a comparatively short journey from Vancouver to Seattle. The train connections between the two were sparse. There was also the added challenge of crossing the border. As you say, I think the bus was used for poor people who had no transport and/or no home. There wasn't any trouble, but I was glad that I was sitting very near the driver, and the door.

'Tis nippy isn't it? We went out to the bins with a load of office rubbish, and I wished I'd put my coat on.
