Time for a brew and then I am going to mess with Tiddles and see if a Shimano front mech twist shift will index with hte rear hub gears. It will read the wrong way round but as most of the markings are rubbed off it won't matter.
The twist shift pulls too much cable.
Might try a rear mech shifter. Somewhere between 1 and 7 there might be the three I want!

NT, I really hate to sound all dull and practical and stuff, but you do know that twist-grip shifters for hub-gears are available, don't you? I know they cost, but it might save a few marbles and endless hours of buggering about...
