........Just think, the people who built the old part of the house will have done everything by hand. No electric chainsaws for them.........

Absolutely. I marvel at it all the time (and I do much of the oak work by hand myself). There are some timbers here 20 feet long which have been ripped along their length by hand, when they were already 400 years old (ie as hard as iron). My house is about 310 years old, but the timbers from which it was made were from an earlier (and much grander) building built between 1200 and 1450.

The chainsaw is petrol. It isn't going to smell nice in the house for a few hours.

Yesterday went well. I got all of the stuff out that I needed to much quicker (and cleaner) then I thought. Then, the first new 2 storey oak post went in beautifully. We do the second today (a mate comes around to help with the lift). At the moment, there is no floor outside our bedroom door, and no staircase, so access to the bedroom is via a ladder, and there is a barrier in place to remind anyone who gets up at night not to just walk out of the door.

Sounds like a good way of getting shot of someone. Remove the barrier then give them the bedroom. They get up during the night, a short drop does the job!

Be good on a Cluedo board. Out the bedroom door, into the hall.(Straight down).

Have fun!

Morning!!
