Work hardened?
I sometimes used chemicals on a daily basis (in summer) so used to wearing hand protection plus in my ex-line of work, I wasn't picking up stuff without gloves...
litter pickers were a boon.
The public wasn't concerned with what they dropped or threw away

I was thinking more the brush and shovel & spade work.

Don't think things have changed regarding throwing things away though.

38 years of picking all sorts of ***t up..
hands were priority protection, you wouldn't believe what can be dumped in flower and shrub beds..
used needles were an ever-present danger...
even in public places..
