Any other language learned is great. Even a few words can break the ice and make a cafe or bar visit on holiday a much better experience. I know lots of odd words in all sorts of languages that can be useful in all sorts of occasions.
My last 'success' in international relations was a friendly word in Japanese to a family watching the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace a while ago.
Greek, however, I know only two words. Three, if you count 'Retsina'
And Moussaka!

The Greek pronunciation puts a stress on the 3rd syllable - unlike the even spread of stress non Greek speakers tend to use. In the Greek spelling you have shown the end 's' is dropped when the moussaka is in the objective.
Just as well I won't be headed that way then. With a Yorkshire accent you can cut with a saw to decipher first, I reckon its enough to be working on. Even a few Greeks who've been over here for the last 30 years have a bit of trouble with the accent.

I know what you mean. When we used to do 2 week holidays in Limassol we met up with a couple from Yorkshire every year. The Mrs I could understand perfectly but the husband, Steve, was an agricultural contractor with a country accent so thick I couldn't understand a word! Both lovely people though.

You need to spend a weekend in the motorway services on the M62!

I have found that to be true with the French, Greeks and Cypriots. However, a few years ago I noticed the growing influx of Russians into Cyprus and they seemed very aloof so I learned a couple of dozen words/phrases in Russian in the hope of making the days there more interesting - talk about seed falling on stony ground! Of course, maybe it's just that the Russians who travel are the elite and so the stuck-up type. In any case, the experience hasn't made me fancy ever visiting Russia.

A few years ago I worked in Nicosia with a guy who used to be a waiter in one of the holiday resorts.

He said the Russians were now the big spenders there, obviously all had money, but they had an arrogant attitude as well.
