Electric backup with battery, it will chirp if the backup is needing to be replaced.
Can't switch it off for obvious reasons...

Take a vacumn cleaner to it. I mark the batteries with the date they went in, changing all at the same time. But never use the ones with the copper coloured top(prone to external leakage) as they can get hot.
