It sounds an amazing day, I would love to think I could do it but the most climbing I've done in one ride is under half that of the DD.

I'll need a serious effort in the goat stages over the winter, but I'd be happy to plod around with the other lesser mortals in the middle of the bunch.

I was looking at the Fred Whitton or Coast to Coast next year as a challenge, but doing the DD with you guys does have a certain appeal. Plus if I get dropped there will be some people from the Bianchi iride club I can chat to.

I've got my leave pass sorted so would be keen to join in, but I might struggle to get all the way round.

Do they have a fair sized broom wagon to sweep up those who bail out?

I hadn't done a ride nearly as long or with as much climbing as this before Kipster, and never even done a proper Sportive before - there has to be a first time for everything! Because you know it's so long and hilly you tend to really take it easy in the first half, use up your energy in the middle, and then just hang on for dear life for the last few miles!

There was loads of support - I think 3 or 4 vans moving up and down the field with mechanics, plus at least one car, and also a motorbike marshall. It seemed very well organised and I'm sure no one would have been left behind. There was VERY little traffic vehicle traffic in the first half of the ride too - a few times I felt guilty holding up a car on a narrow road for quite some time, and when I was eventually able to let it through it was almost always one of the support vehicles!

@JLaw are you joining the Handicap tonight?

I have made the neutralized zone at the start a little longer (0.15 miles, 0.24 km) to give a bit more time for you to get up to speed and for everyone to line up behind you.

Cheers,

Geoff
Will not be joining tonight due to work :cursing:. I'll grab a few ghosts and try to get it done Wednesday :bicycle:.

Cracking waffling from The Paella Man^_^

I do worry it's a bit like the film Deliverance up there what with Bill's wrist, err, complaint last year and now his bum wiggle:ohmy: I will need some reassurances before i venture west next year, preferably from bridgy.

Sorry Bob, but I can't guarantee the DD won't have you squealing like a little piggy in places :mrpig:. In fact it probably will.
But you probably better listen to myself or Adam :heat::cry: for reassurances, as Bridgy makes it sound unrealistically easy and was as fresh as a daisy at the end.:becool:

Will need something larger than a 27 tooth cog on the rear cassette? Mind you campag only go to 29.

We all became very fond of our 32 tooth rear cog, I can tell you. It was probably my most used gear. My rear cassette is actually a mountain bike one, but it was perfect for this event, and I never change it. But then it is very hilly where I live. Bridgy and I put longer cages on too, to compensate for the wider range and to clear the cassette. But Bill got by with a standard cage, so take your pick!
With regards to Bridgy skipping around like a Morris Dancer at the end, I think he got a lift for the last 20 miles.

It does sound like 'fun', sort of! If I can stay fit on the turbo I'd be up for next year too. A few of us could form quite a nice autobus :hugs:

We could even check out the local bus timetables to sort out the hilly bits - mind there's probably only one a day and never on a Sunday, if I remember right as my mother came from around that area.

You never know, a bit more practice for team White and a good set of lights, we might make it back for closing time - I take it the pubs are now open on Sundays.
