I have done 3 century rides. My experience is. The last week just do very easy 10-20 mile rides till Thursday

Prepare shorts with Chamois cream
Take 3 inner tubes
.
Drink minimum 500mil of fluids per hour regularly, eat 50g of carbs per hour (my preference flapjacks cut into squares to give me the required nutrition) a banana every other hour.
Don't go too hard, find a group and chat along whilst riding, draft when tired. Drop off the pace of they're too fast, find another group. Enjoy the event and I hope the weather is good for you.

Feel the sense of achievement at the milestone

Fwiw
Before I did a 24h London to Paris last year I had never ridden more than 60 or so miles in a day. I tell a lie. I did London to Brighton and back 2 weeks or so before hand. A big breakfast and then Cream tea half way there, a banana either side, a pasta and tin of Coke in Brighton and then nothing but an ice cream and another Coke on the way back. That was fine. I hate gels really and only use them on the turbo because I made the mistake of buying in bulk. In France we ate bananas, croissants, pain aux choc, the odd snickers and drank lots of water and Coke as well as coffee. That was fine too. I did have some emergency gel rations in my bag but just didn't want to use them. I am slightly suspicious of the whole industry around energy gels etc. But I understand why some people prefer ease of taking them.

I probably wouldn't ride hard for 2-3 days beforehand and in my experience and for me that was fine too. I think it is just as important not only not art too fast.

Cheers guys, I'll definately take all that on board.

I'm going to use my everyday bike as its more comfy. Really interesting to hear your philosophy's on energy intake as I've never been very exacting about it and it's obv more relevant the deeper you go.

I'm with you on the gels bobinski. I can't seem to use one without getting sticky hands and it does my head in watching people launch them into bushes when they've drunk them.

'Sneakers'!
If your eating sneakers you will run into digestive problems!

Haha! That may explain my gut...

I prefer 'Marathon' as that is what you will be doing Tommy. I found them to be too sugary, maybe one. I prefer less sweetened carbs. Don't overdo food intake or you will bloat. It is a fine balance eating just enough but not too much.

This is it Andy. I've done smaller rides before and sort of bluffed it. But I think I'll get found out if I don't try and regulate myself a little better.

As for bobinski peddling back from Brighton with nothing more than a 99 with a flake for an energy supplement... I guess that's what you can get away with when you're a beast on the bike!

Just googled 99 and a flake. I always think a big ride is an excuse to eat all the ice cream you want. One of the extreme athletes here swears by melted ice cream in a camel back. He runs the Iditarod trail
Without dogs.

On a more realistic note...

I've signed up to do my first century next weekend and I'm a little apprehensive to say the least. I'd be really grateful for any advice. How many days rest do you think I should have pre ride? What's best in terms of energy boosts? I'm not at all keen on gels.
I try and stay away from sugary food, so take sandwiches (sandwich thins) normally with peanut butter and marmite (protein and salts wrapped in carbs), plus bananas, eat little and often don't wait until you need it. Drink plenty. Pre ride try some beetroot juice, it helps the blood flow, which helps oxygen get to the muscles.

Watched a documentary on the 'dog' race a while back, very interesting it was too.
Running it on foot though, respect, does he do that in the snow with snow shoes, even more respect. I've done a few snow shoe assaults in Norway and I must say that just running any distance in snow is very hard work and should be avoided at all cost.

Just googled Iditarod trail. Wow! Kinda puts my little bike ride into perspective.

Cheers kipster. I've heard beetroot juice was good in the past but never tried it.

Whatever happened to mixed fruit and nuts with broken bits of Kendal Mint Cake in a bag in your back pocket. Did that go out of vogue with chamois leather short inserts in your wool shorts's?
Banana's were always a favourite though and they came in bio-degradable wrappers before we knew what bio-degradable was.

Beetroot juice is definitely good for you as well and should be taken post exercise as well as its stuffed with antioxidants as but it is a bit 'Marmite' as you either love it or hate it.

I did have pasta and coke before setting off back to London. It's 50 miles. We did 35 this morning:okay: and much faster as well.

The youngest and fittest on our ride to Paris was the slowest. He ate continuously. Huge amounts, fearful of not being properly fuelled and it backfired holding us up and delaying our arrival in Paris.

The human powered race is only 350 miles. This year with little snow a fat bike set a new record.

Kipster. We are looking at another dog and my wife loves the name Kipster. It is on the top of her list right now. I hope you wouldn't mind if she names it after you.
