just look at the ends-its usually the green snd orange lined crossed for a crossover cable.

Does anyone know if there is a standard type of cable for connecting your phone to the box on the wall or is it phone specific ?

I think it's phone specific at the phone end, take the phone to the shop when buying the cable.
The phone could be broken?

Its the cable Pat , it stll works but the wee plastic clip broke that holds it in the phone so it keeps falling out , I want to move the phone further away from the socket anyway and the cable is not long enough so thought I would replace it, thats when I discovered that they wire the cables up in different ways which are phone specific , think I have sussed it out , glue the cable into the phone and use an extension cable , just need to find out if the extensions are standard .

@Eddy why this palava? Take the phone with you to the shop, ask for a longer cable to fit.

Palava is the correct word , what should be a pretty staight forward thing seems to be made complicated by wiring the cables up in different ways with different number of pins so a cable that fits might not work .

Extensions are standard.
The wire from the base unit to the wall socket can vary. But that won't affect you.

Isn't that just a fax / modem / cable though? Wilkinsons has them, but you do need to look in the stationery section where they sell computing accessories.

Not quite, wired for a specific phone model, the one pictured.

Stick with the extension lead, wired the same and goes from the end of the phone lead to the box. Less to go wrong.

I tjink you've gone the right way, just glue it in!.

You could try a crossover cable but just buying a BT style extension cable means far less to go wrong!.
