Surely the US has laws in place to stop profiteering from the sale of body parts. The original auction sale of the leg would I'm sure be void. If I was a lawyer I'd prove it. ;)
 
There was a case in the town I lived in, 20-odd years ago, where the bin men found several horses' legs in a bin, reported it to the police as suspicious, thinking perhaps it was some sort of horse mutilator or something.

Turned-out to be a guy training to be a blacksmith, he'd bought them from the abbatoir and was practicing shoeing them....
