I got the cane for telling my chemistry teacher (him of "don't put turps in chlorine" fame) for plumbing my bunsen burner onto the water tap and, after putting my hand up to raise the issue, explained that I had a duff bunsen burner and could I have a new one please...

Miss Rocks (trainee supply) demonstrating the flammability of various solvents using a plastic tray.....big fire. Sacked on the spot. Bless her.

Not chemistry but metalwork. I seem to think it was a copper item we were annealing or planishing...part of the process was to dip it into a ceramic sink that sat on the floor with acid in it. I did so and a cloud of fumes bellowed up... almost engulfing me .
