I dunno about your country, but I would think the speed sensor woukd not be calibrated, or admissible in court, the police woukd need an officially recognised and calibrated one, that takes two timed pictures of the vehicle
I think you are probably correct on that score. I will find out when I ask him.

Have you ever wondered just how often your image is recorded in any given day?

If you are out in public your image is being recorded.
I'm not saying my face isn't recorded by cameras but I know of no examples of my face being displayed in public.

Or my car registration, for that matter.

Slightly tangential, but there are a couple of local villages near where I live where local residents operate calibrated speed guns on roads where there have been accidents caused by speed in the past.

They do not try to pretend that they are police (their average age is 60+ which rather gives that away anyway!) and so a number of drivers ignore them, considering that the inevitable arm-waving and hard-staring is the only consequence of their speeding past them. However, if they are 'caught' twice within 12 months, the owner of the car receives a very strongly-worded letter from the local constabulary enclosing the offending pictures and confirming that their car reg. has been added to a list of cars for 'heightened-monitoring' and circulated to all local police officers.

Whether there is such a list is a matter of conjecture, but when these letters started to be received it certainty caused a stir locally and I understand that the frequency of those speeding has considerably reduced.

Given the funding pressures on plod I think that this initiative by locals has real worth.

I took this video at a speed trap near my house and sent it to the police and council... Their response? Nothing. A week later the speed trap was taken away...

We have them on the main road into the village where I live. The council considered them a success because when they laid traffic monitoring sensors, only 50% of motorists now speed past two junior schools and along the narrow winding road at the centre. :banghead:

The same council also considers less than 50 vehicles per hour travelling on a road banned to vehicles except for access and on which there are half dozen houses, to be acceptable.

I asked the guy putting it in place if he would move it within the week as its on my grass and it makes it hard to cut. He said he would move it to the other side of the road and monitor the speed of the traffic leaving the village.

The word "monitor" gives the impression of some recording device. But I cannot be sure.

There's one of those on the road near my works. Unfortunately it's triggering for traffic within the limit too, so it's not putting off the people going 50-60 in a 30.
I'd prefer those signs that show actual speed.

Wasn't there a trial of name-and-shame a while back? Where the sign showed the reg number of the speeder?

Slightly off topic, but does anyone else put a sprint on when approaching them on the bike? ^_^

We have them in our village. Ironically, considering they're supposed to be present for safety purposes, it's somewhat worrying to see the bloke park his car halfway up the path while he installed the device. Cue one indignant email to the parish carncil.
Well that was probably misdirected indignation. County councils manage almost all roads, not the parish - I'm surprised you didn't know that. At best, the parish will have passed it on.

I guess one note of caution would be the question of if you've photographed the right vehicle.

I've approached them in the UK, got the smiley face. Occasionally though, as I've got very near, the face has turned to the grimacing one and the speed indicator has shot up - because it's picked up the car approaching behind. But I'd be the one near the sign...

The solution to that is to take the photo, with a long lens if necessary, from sufficiently far back that it's clear only one vehicle is involved.

Years ago I saw one in the distance and got up out of the saddle and went for it.

Approaching it I saw 35mph when all of a sudden a bus came past me, Garmin confirmed my speed when I got home later though.

It happens all the time, just watch the news for any broadcast made in public, typically "from the scene". You'll see hundreds of faces filmed and almost as many vehicle registration numbers, all put on national TV without a problem.

It's probably the effect of the 4x speed of the video but some of the vehicles that didn't trigger the warning seemed to be doing the same speed as those that did, and vice versa.

The speed warnings like that in my area are forever going off at well below thirty.
