Did a 71 today and my bum has chafing sore as well as it feeling bruised. Using Polaris bib tights commando and have a selle Italian q tip seat. Never felt so much pain. My mountain bike has a wtb volt on which is much more comfortable. Will the LBS be able to measure my sit bones? I have a very little narrow arse. I'm also going to try chamois cream. I feel like giving up cycling it's so bad.

Give it 24 hours and a bright sunny day and it will be a distant memory.

You LBS might well have an assometer and can measure your sit bones. In the meantime why not use your MTB saddle until you have a saddle that is perfect for your bum.

Anything over about 50 and I'll put some chafing cream on... worth a try, and cheaper than a new saddle. It'll probably help with preventing the sores anyway. Not so much the saddle soreness of course, that possibly could need a new saddle.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
The volt saddle comes in 3 widths , why not measure the one you have and get another for the road bike ? i have been getting chafing lately and found the pad on my nicer shorts is thicker and the edge was sitting in the leg/ groin join and causing chafing.

I went for the narrow. I used to think it was more of a MTB saddle but should be fine on a roadie. Maybe my saddle height is a little high and the hips have been rocking slightly but on a long ride enough to cause damage.

Because one's posture is different on a road bike so the same saddle might not be right.

Wait until the front edge chafes...

Probably. It's easier to do it yourself if you can feel the bony bits, as the lbs will probably use a mat or something less precise because they are reluctant to grope customers.

I'm a fan of saddle shaped saddles and wary of suggestions that adding padding will solve ill fitting saddles or that adding cream will solve bad padding.

The most fundamentally important question of them all hasn't been asked yet........what was the build-up to 71 miles? If you have hundreds and hundreds of miles behind you, with a gradual build up from 10 mile rides to regular problem-free 50 mile rides, then, yes, you need to look at a saddle fit, your shorts, and some lubrication. If you've just cracked the bike shed door open last week, dusted off the cobwebs, done a 5 miler to check that everything works, then done your 71 miles, you got just exactly what you deserve. If you've not ridden much, then little-and-often is the formula to start with.
