I don't mind buying American. Your average yank artisan is just a guy or gal trying to turn an honest buck and has nothing to do with the madness. After all, the lunatics also run the asylum here and we'd have no qualms buying British.

But I do object to directly doing business with dangerous loons, so wouldn't have a Tesla and I'm not going the Starlink way for the van.

It’s illegal on uk roads. It is there purely for marketing of the brand to sell the other cars. It’s attention seeking only.

I'm surprised they didn't make a European version with less dangerous bodywork i.e. that would be legal to drive here. But I guess we are only a tiny market. I've seen a few of these owned by youtubers, they don't seem to offer anything useful for the price apart from being a novelty item

As I understand it, the stainless is very difficult to work with and if they wanted to keep it remotely affordable they had little choice but to go with the flattish panels. They could make it curvy to meet UK/EU regs for various collision tests, but it'd then cost a couple of million a pop.

Furthermore I understand it’s more than just the body panels that are a problem for a conformity certificate; the steer-by-wire can’t be tested in a SVA test and the windscreen is toughened. Some commentators also say you need a C1 licence to drive it but I believe that there is an extra mass allowance for EVs over and above 3,500 kg so it can be driven on a B.

Ultimately it has no conformity certificate and can’t pass a SVA so cannot legally be driven in the UK.

Yanni from CarWow bought one of an Albanian down a back street :crazy: Tried to get all the certification to drive one in the UK

I dont think he succeeded so sold the car in Saudi or somewhere like that.

Remember Delorean. That was angular body panels, it was stainless too

There's a clip of one of these against a big yank ford pick-up and apart from getting stuck in the mud, the bloke literally pulled it apart whilst trying to do the same to the does and failing.

if that they seem to have all the controls on a touch screen
which - to my mind - is just dangerous as it tempts you to take you eyes off the road to press a button

on "proper cars" you can find it by feel as it is on a specific button - and not just on a flat screen

My current car has a few things like that - and I find it a real problem to use those features

I like it because it's different. You may call it ugly, but if there is a good looking EV out there I've yet to see it.

It's a bit like Camo trousers - it suits some people if you can get away with that look. But a huge tank-thing on the driveway of someone who dresses like Prince William looks a bit silly I think. However, some EVs do look really nice. Like the Polestar2. Even the new Ford Capri EV does look fairly nice, if nothing like the traditioal OG capri
