Once again the ministry for stating the bleedin' obvious is to the fore...

" a new awareness campaign warning cyclists that undertaking lorries at junctions can be fatal"

Although to be fair the mirrors, might be of some use, and raising awareness amongst lorry drivers can only be for the good.

One could argue that if it's that bleeding obvious, there wouldn't be as many people doing it.

Unfortunately, not the kind of lesson learned from experience.

Instead of the mirrors helping to show that a lorry is being undertaken by a cyclist whilst indicating to turn left, why not just make it mandetory to have "DO NOT PASS ON THE LEFT YOU NUMPTY" signs on the rear of the vehicle?

I despare at the moment as people filter up the left hand side of indicating vehicles. I shout warnings to some but they tend not hear me as they predominately have headphones. *sigh*

We've all seen the pictogram of the bicycle in cycle lanes, yes?

At junctions, paint a pictogram of a flat bike with crushed wheels. Simple.

Not painting cycle lanes up the inside of the road at left turns would be a good start. You can hardly blame people for using them if they think that's what they're supposed to do - it's practically an attractive nuisance

But that won't solve the problem of cyclist (mostly female) being left hooked by drivers how have just overtaken them. A large part of the problem is not cyclists flitering up the nearside, it is cyclists riding in the gutter and not being seen by drivers...

No amount of mirrors will stop that type of incident. We are all aware that a contingent of drivers have a tendancy to overtake and cut impatiently across us. Whilst I favour the idea and appreciate TfL are trying to help with the problem and the awareness campain is great I just don't feel they've hit the mark with the mirrors.

Cycle lanes segregating cyclists and drivers insinuating that from a drivers perspective a user shouldn't be on the road and...... theres a thread discussing this elsewhere isn't there?

Ah HaloJ, you have just hit the nail on the head, if TfL was really serious about this issue it would be putting in segregating cycle lanes as part of so called cycle superhighways, but than would mean making a really serious investment in infrastructure. Throwing a wee bit of blue paint about and sticking up a few mirrors is far cheaper...

Lorries usually kill cyclists at junctions. How would segregated cycle-lanes prevent this?

The only segregated system that protects cyclists from large motor-vehicles is the railways.

a bike on the road has to take some responsibility for using the road, you can't chnage roads so much that they safe for people riding in an incompetent and unsafe manner
