I got taken by surprise by another cyclist today. I was pottering home at a leisurely pace coming into Bessacarr, doing maybe 17 or 18 mph when I saw him in my mirror around 25 yards back. He slipstreamed me and then overtook me. Now I was pretty sure that this was the same guy who I'd played leap frog with last year (this was before I'd got my road bike, so I was on my hybrid). Anyway if it was the same guy, he'd not be turning off until Bentley, around 5 or 6 miles further on! I decided to just 'sit in' behind him and enjoy the slipstream, and I have to say.....what a difference it makes! 25 mph has never been so easy! A little red devil appeared on my shoulder going up North Bridge, a couple of hundred yards before his turn off. It was telling me to blast past him now that he's knacked and I've just had a 5 mile rest!

I didn't though, it wouldn't have been fair. Long story short, when we got to Bentley roundabout I thanked him for the help and I couldn't help noticing that he was drenched in sweat and I wasn't!

If you're on here mystery front man, next time you can be the slipstreamee.

This is my average speed on the road bike (almost all flat). On the (very infrequently used) hybrid it's around 15mph. It's amazing though how you up the pace when another rider's nearby.
