I've been out for my first long ride *and a bunch more excuses* on my (relatively) new MTB today.
The 30 mile mark happened to be on The Ave through Greenwich Park (uphill). Being fairly happy with the pace I was doing on an MTB up the hill I thought I'd 'smash' the rest of the hill out of the saddle (nothing to do with 'The Game' of course).
As soon as I left my comfy seat both quads locked and I very gracefully dismounted and tactically crawled away from the road... All whilst looking like the coolest and fastest climber...

Anyway, thanks to the two fellow cyclists (one roadie who gave me a Magnesium & Potassium tablet and the other who gave me Jelly Babies and accompanied me across the heath), the runner and driver who all stopped to give me a hand.

Posting here to restore faith in humanity and see if any are active CCers.

Glad some people stopped to assist and that you're okay!

Good work to those that helped, sorry to hear it happened- when that exact same thing happened to me on mile 36 of a 42 mile sportive plenty of fluids cleared it (incase there's no one with special tablets and jelly babies around)
Hope it doesn't put you off.

Thanks. I'd been slowly having Lucozade and Winegums along the ride but what caught me out was the effort of the mountain bike along the Thames Path and the bit before that compared to road riding. I never normally go more than 25mi (albiet pretty quickly) on the roadie so this was a big step up in distance. I can't wait to do the shorter route with my friend on Sunday, the pace will be slow so all is well.

I jumped from 14 miles to 65, albeit with no horrible cramps. I must be lucky!

Yep so important to keep hydrated. If going on a sportive I start they day before by keeping up with water intake. Beer is a no no the night before unless you take a pint of water between every drink.

I stopped the other day to help an ill prepared rider with a flat. I always make a point of stopping for a rider in distress as I would hope someone would for me. Even stopping when it looks like they have everything going under control because you never know! ☺
