I just listened to an interview of Tony Blair on the French radio " Europe 1" about Brexit and I expected to hear a translation of his comments but oh no! Blair speaks fluent French with a very good knowledge of the language. That was a pleasant surprise. I wonder how many more politicians in this country speak a second language?

I remember when Blair used the phrase ''I do not resile from...'' and, though I'd never heard the word used in English (I don't think it was in current use), I understood it via the French verb résilier. I suspect he reintroduced - I think it might have been May who recently echoed the word in a far less European sense - it from French.

Dons anorak- was that via 183khz long wave radio flavour or just on the World Wide Wait ?- removes anorak.

I only ask as I'd be interested to know how well the old long wave signal makes it up there into north Wales from their Germany transmitter. And yes I am very dull.

I can receive very clearly Europe 1, RTL and France Inter on long waves either in my car or at home, here in North Wales. They are the only stations I listen to as I don't like English radio.
To be fair, you can also get them on internet.

Barely on topic, I know, but: I was just reading a page summarising road rules for cyclists in France (since I'll be there in just over a week :hyper:), and apparently, cyclists must ride single-file after dark! The other rules mentioned on this page seemed straightforward enough, but that one surprised me.

I like the European stations too, and certainly for music radio, the Dutch(and French for that matter) seem to do it so much better than Britain with our soul destroying Heart, Star, Absollute, Smooth Radio and the like. The good folks who founded Radio Caroline must often wonder why the hell they ever bothered!

It's amazing how far those long wave signals will travel. Although the Europe 1 stick on 183khz is in German territory, it's so close to the French border it's shadow often straddles both countries.
Sadly France Inter on 162khz is scheduled to close down for good on 31st December this year, so make the most of it. Also, I keep hearing rumours that the Irish plan to close RTE Radio 1 on 252khz soon too. At least it will mean we'll be able to hear the French language Algerian station on the same channel much more clearly. The Algerians recently overhauled their transmitter and it absolutely batters RTE here at night (and during daylight in winter).
For anyone still awake, another French language long wave station, RMC (Radio Monte Carlo) can often be heard on 216khz.

Thank you for the info about France Inter closing down on long wave. I wasn't aware of that.

Being only 22 miles away from your homeland @gavroche i get countless French radio stations. At certain times of the day the choice of music can be surprisingly eclectic:wacko:

I'm often over on the Essex coast for work and the FM band starts filling up with Dutch, French and Belgian stations anywhere beyond about Ipswich. For eclectic, you can't beat Radio 100%NL- every track they play is Dutch! I can't remember the frequency though. Radio 10 on 87.7fm is good as is Belgium's Joe FM on 104.1. France Bleu 94.7 play some good stuff (more oldies) as do Dutch NPOon 96.8. Some good stuff out there, though I'm not sure my long suffering colleagues who often travel with me will agree!
