I offered a carpenter the wood from a mature ash and sycamore that had to be felled ... but he said it was too much hassle to get it seasoned.

I found my guy by googling and was really lucky. He came with his own Heath Robinson-like contraption to plank it (using a long chainsaw and a massive tripod to take the weight) and stacked it in my garden (where it had fallen - luckily we have a lot of space). Then a year later he took it away to kiln it and made up the table really quickly. He also turned out to be a smashing bloke, a bit of a one-off character who is interested in all sorts of things like growing unusual veg and trying out different crafts. It was also, although not cheap, really reasonable.

Also he's going to turn a few bowls from the outer leftovers - I said he could have them and turn as many as he liked as long as we could have one. It's such a lovely grain. I should say it looks a little yellower in the pic than in real life due to the limitations of my ancient phone camera, plus it is also a little bit yellow due to the Danish oil on it.
