The estate I live on is a bit dodgy

Ed, I seem to recall you live in Manchester somewhere. If so can I ask which estate so I make sure to avoid it? I'm only little, a girl, and on a Brompton, if someone decides they want it I've got no chance.

I have had someone(s) - group of kids - throw insults at either me or my husband (I think it was aimed at our bikes) as we cycled past through the back end of Levenshulme before - don't think they wanted the bike, just to annoy us, but I don't cycle that way anymore (found a better, shorter route).

I regret to say my Subaru Impreza driving niece has been on several television programmes and has several You Tube exerpts because of her street racing hobby.

i've beaten a few impreza's off the line in a '79 fiesta

once they're at 30mph or more the turbo has a chance and thats it all over, i only move quicker cos i'm lighter and can rev up quicker

i also seem able to cope with roundabouts when driving through my parents' home town but the local 'car enthusiasts' don't seem able to cope with them.

anyway, back on subject?

A few years ago a kid on a Halfords yelled 'Race you" as I pulled out onto the hill outside work.

I'm guessing they wern't expecting to race, otherwise take it upto redline and sidestep the clutch and the 4x4 will beat you off the line every time.

The trick with riders who over take you is to wait for the next hill while keeping them in sight
As they get on the hill, hit the afterburners and go past at twice their speed

Mostly this works, although a couple of months ago I was on the singlespeed and going down with a cold and the counter attack was counter-counter attacked. Mind you as he passed me the second time he did look like he was in pain
