That's an illegal move you ****!

Some people just like playing "let's be Mr Plod". Ignore them.

I assume you mean the segregated bit of cycle path on the pavement, not the cycle lane marked off with a dotted line on the carriageway! That last looks well dodgy to tackle contraflow! (or any-flow, for that matter  ).

Same type of people that say "you're not the police" to helmet camera users...

And claim they are infringing on their rights by filming them and/or they should "get a life".

One minute its ok to ride on the pavement, the next its not. Where's the logic ? You'd be nuts to follow mount and dismount when you really should on uk cycle paths - you might as well ride a pogo stick to acheive the same effect.

I don't think I would ever dismount there because it is pointless. What really matters is that you take care around pedestrians.

The OP says that he dismounts onto the island.

There's nothing wrong with what you did.

The language of motorists can be very confusing. Mainly because they use many different phrases to say the same thing. And, as in this case, all of the phrases can be interpreted to mean...

"Hey! That's not fair! I'm not allowed to do that, so neither should you be!"
[/quote]

nope, he says he rides onto it if no pedestrians. its a bit like if a tree falls down and theres nobody there does it make a noise.

we know its not right riding on pavements.

driver was an arse though

Thing is, how do I get from road to path on other side of road without either:

A. Stopping and dismount amidst moving traffic.
B. Riding onto the island.

?

Sounds like the guy was just a tw@t having a bad day. If people shout things at me, I just ignore them.

Like on Tuesday night, the box-section of the exhaust pipe fell off my car and was dragging along behind, sparks flying. As I slowly drove the 50 feet from the location of the incident to the front door of my mate's house, at 10 mph, with the hazards on, some tool starts beep at me and flashing his lights, wanting me to get out of the way ... why couldn't he have waited for less than 10 seconds?

Some people are just born @rseholes.

There's an issue re dismounting at lights, walking your bike over the footpath/roadway at a junction, and remounting on he other side (tho' if you carried you bike I think that's legal). Whereas in your case you're changing direction - I can't see there's any difference between pulling up at the footpath drop on the left or the one on the right, it's a change of direction not offering by the junction otherwise anyway.

I may, of course. be talking utter rubbish...

IMHO
I think a lot depends on how much traffic there is.
I know this stretch of road and it can get really busy.

If there is lots of stationary / queueing traffic, and OP is filtering of right of RH lane then exits right onto pavement, where's the problem? (assuming no peds waiting).

I'd be a bit more worried if traffic is flowing freely, OP riding (say primary) in RH lane, then turns right onto island, as cars behind are expecting you to follow lane to left. Don't see it as illegal, but I hate doing things that drivers are not expecting.
If traffic is flowing freely I'd be in the LH land and exit onto crossing left, then cross as a ped (probably riding). It's be a bit slower, but I'd be more comfortable that less could go wrong.

Err...

That actually is exactly what I do!

I do indicate that I'm turning onto the island, if anyone understands what on earth I'm doing indicating right on a road which turns left!

However there is very, very rarely anyone behind me - most traffic seems to move into the left lane on that turn as the right lane merges with the traffic coming from the other direction.

I think if the only incident if some idiot shouting at you then you're fine.

Do you feel in danger?
If most of the traffic is in the LH lane they'll be happier that you are not in their way!
