I think the driver is on about that it is a matter of there is no right turn at that junction for road users. The correct method for a cyclist would be to approach the junction in the left lane, dismount on the left, use the crossing to cross the carridgeways till they reach the cycle path. The driver may have a point!!!!

You also can't see all the broken glass covering it from that picture.

I really need to sort out an alternative route, as there's a load of roadworks further on that take me on a right merry soujorn.

Have you tried Markeaton Street? - runs parallel to Ashbourne Road and it a lot quieter / more picturesque in my experience (3 times last week).
