Tesco make a profit - and f*ck the farmer in the process.

Don't shop at Tesco!

& where possible buy fair trade goods!

Can i add to buy local, its not only foreign farmers who get f***** by supermarkets. Its a disgrace that millions of pigs and chickens live in hellish conditions just because us consumers want meat in every meal, and we want it cheap! and that dairy farmers go out of bussines (to be replaced by factory dairies) because we want milk a few pence cheaper.

 Erm ...

For my sins, I have indeed done some shopping at the evil Tesco of late. That's because the Lady Wife is currently on chemotherapy, and in her case, one side-effect of that is announcements at various times of the day and night that she fancies eating something in particular. Tesco is nearby and is open at all hours.

Can I just say that for the rest of the time we grow as much of our own food as possible in the back garden and on two allotments (we're both veggie), we shop regularly at the nearest farm shop which isn't a con, we make our own bread from flour we mill ourselves from biodynamically grown grain, and for what its worth use the car only for trips to and from the hospital. The rest of the time, we travel by bike and cargo trike.

We bought Joanna Blythman's "Shopped" when it came out 7 years ago, and Andrew Simm's "Tescopoly" 4 years ago. BTW, if you're into this stuff, "New Supermarket Design" by Christian Campos is thought-provoking. I had, in truth, completely forgotten that I'd read about the pineapple thing.

For the record, I dislike Tesco as much as any sane person, but alas I don't see us (generic) going back to the corner shop model any time soon. Most of my contempt is reserved for those who profess a dislike for Tesco on ethical grounds, so drive in their 4 x 4s instead to Waitrose in order to stock up on parts of dead animals because Waitrose cares for the British farmer. They are obviously very easily fooled.

Fairtrade. It's a must. It doesn't mean 'perfect' but it does mean 'not grotesquely exploitative'. And watch out for '70% fairtrade ingredients' on Co-op chocolate.

And, whatever the sins of the customers, Waitrose is a whole lot better bet.

i dont want a corner shop model, i dont think all supermarkets are evil. my main gripe is that we eat too much cheap food. Food shouldn't be cheap. if more people shop at farm shops and local suppliers then supermarkets might al least change some of their practices. im not an expert just a idealistic foolish youth. ive thought about going vege on animal welfare grounds but instead i rear my own pork and chicken and dont eat any meat that i dont know 100% that its free range. can be tricky but i just tell people im vegetarian sometimes to avoid agro (coward too).

But isn't the corner shop coming back? Here in Manchester in the last year or two dozens of small Metro type supermarkets have sprung up to cater for the growing numbers living in the city centre. They are clean, air conditioned, bright and have a huge variety that a small privately-owned shop could never have managed.

On the OP, seafreight charges around the world are around £0.11 per kilo at the moment.

I am really not sure what the problem is.

As Del points out, if you want to see the farmer get a good cut then buy fairtrade. Fairtrade goods are in tesco if you want to shop there. Or elsewhere if not.

Where is this assumption that all the profit goes to Tesco coming from. The farmer is free to grow and market what he likes and is not tied in to any UK supermarket.

Poor farmers? How come Bernard Matthews was worth 300 million? Seems not all farmers are poor and being ripped off.

If the pineapple was £5.00 in Waitrose, how do you know if any more of your money is going to the grower? Unless it is fairtrade then it is probably not. All you do is give a supermarket £4.10 profit instead of 10p

Every high street is full of cheap goods made around the world at slave labour rates. Be this clothing, electrical goods food or whatever.

I really see no reason to single out Tesco as the bad guy in this.

Only thing worse than supporting a trade that employs people at slave rates is to stop supporting it and they then starve.

Yes in an ideal world all goods will be fair trade and I would like to see it extended out from food to clothing and electrical goods.

Some interesting views, for sure.

Though accepting that the Fair Trade thing is definitely a step in the right direction, I'm by no means as convinced as some apparently are that the reality of it is quite as smiley-people-singing-Kumbaya-round-the-new-school as they would have us believe.

And as for Waitrose being better than most, they probably are. But that makes them the best of a bad lot, not a paragon of retail virtue. One thing I do admire Waitrose for though is the way in which it bluffs and bamboozles its target market. No other supermarket chain has got that down to a fine art.
