Poor farmers? How come Bernard Matthews was worth 300 million? Seems not all farmers are poor and being ripped off.

he wasn't a farmer he was s a food processor - where do you think all the turkey twizzlers that made him his millions came from?

If the pineapple was £5.00 in Waitrose,

Actually 1.99 or 2 for £3 for fairtrade pineapples at the moment in waitrose

Tesco fairtade pineapple £1.71, non fairtrade £1

Sainsbury fairtrade pineapple £1.79

His Farm.

He began as a farmer but then did expand into processing his product. He did (and the company still does) produce turkeys on his farm so really you cannot say he is not a farmer.

The point being that he dealt with the supermarkets and big players and was not a poor downtrodden farmer.

He like all farmers make a choice as to the market sector they wish to produce for and then make/grow their product accordingly.

Some may take their chance selling a few packs of product for a fortune at the local farmers market while others sell in bulk on a tiny margin.
We the consumer then have a choice as to where we choose to buy.

Or how little Tesco make out of it???

Simple fact is if it was £5 in the shop your poor Costa Rican farmer would be poorer.

He took the deal from Tesco of his own free will as do all farmers who deal with supermarkets direct. They cut out the middle man and get a guaranteed buyer so clearly see it as a better option.

I think that's probably arguable. If every super market offers a really, really low price then there isn't really any free will. Especially if the farmer cannot change his crop, or has little negotiation power.

With that said however, I don't have any issues with Tesco, but always good to have an open mind.

i dont want a corner shop model, i dont think all supermarkets are evil. my main gripe is that we eat too much cheap food. Food shouldn't be cheap. if more people shop at farm shops and local suppliers then supermarkets might al least change some of their practices. im not an expert just a idealistic foolish youth. ive thought about going vege on animal welfare grounds but instead i rear my own pork and chicken and dont eat any meat that i dont know 100% that its free range. can be tricky but i just tell people im vegetarian sometimes to avoid agro (coward too).

can you pork your own rear too  . If i had the time and the land I would like to "grow my own" chickens and piggies . sadly times have changed and i don't have that time luxury. hencve using supermarkets.

I cannot .

I realise i am extremely lucky to be able to rear my own meat. but when i do buy it from the shop i buy free range shizzle so its not one or the other. ive re read my other posts and i come over as a nutter lol. im not, and i normally make a point of not preaching my views so i apologise.

P.S. waitrose is pretty good value for laods of stuff, youve just got to be carefull not to get carried away. my vote goes to Coop.

I live on Waitrose food but really have no idea how much most of it costs! I do find their food good and well packed in basic packaging.

All I know is if you buy cheap beans, all the tomato sauce is really thin and soaks into the toast and that cheap apples go off quickly. So more to it than the price at the checkout.

I mainly work from home so lunch is usually eating up leftovers and stuff near its sell-by date. Nothing gets thrown away.

Then you, sir, are their dream customer! Watch out for Cook targetting you too ;)

Dunno about Aldi, but the fruit and veg in our local Lidl is easily the best quality in town (the farm shop is out of town) and the prices are good too.

prejudices shining through again!

I do all the family shopping and cooking and have done for more than 20 years. I have at various times used pretty exclusively Tesco, Sainbsbury or Waitrose.

Some time ago I recognised that quality for quality (eg waitrose essential chicken vs Tesco premium) Waitrose is no more expensive. The difference is that Waitrose does not cover the super cheap low quality end of the market.

I've tried the experiment of buying eg chicken from both, and the difference in quality is visible in the pan, and the family can tell the difference in a blind test on the plate.

Yes of course, Waitrose stocks produce from the premium end of the market as well but to characterise them as overpriced across their range is nothing but ignorance

Anyone here ever tried "freeganism"? Getting stuff out of supermarket bins, that's perfectly good but reached sell by date?
