The 5 second rule

A question about the 5 second rule, you know the one: "as long as you pick up the food item off the floor (in this case sweet potato) within 5 seconds, it's OK to eat it"

So, does the timer continue when it's dropped the second time, or does it reset and start another 5 second countdown?

Answers in the next few minutes appreciated

It's always been 3 secs around these parts.. and it doesn't reset. 2nd drop results in an instant 'bin it'

It's fine as long as you lick it clean first.

Why does toast always fall the jam/butter side down
Depends on a few things:
How hard it will be to clean up any mess made.
When combined with answer from how long you'd been waiting, it greatly increases the "chance" of jam/butter side impact
How long you'd actually been waiting on said toast.
The longer you'd been waiting the more likely it is to to land jam/butter side down.
Whether the floor is carpet or other.
Goes with how hard it will be to clean the mess up, but also increases the pieces requiring removal before consuming.
Can you make any more.
The closer you are to the last of your bread, the higher the "chance" of a jam/butter impact.
