Shame about Collingwood. I'm still unclear who they replace all round skills with. Chapeau to Prior.

Well it's 6:36 and the Aussies are 171/7. Only 11 balls left, but theres a chance England will take the extra half an hour. This has made this all night dissertation session in the library barable! What a performance by the lads.

the extra half hour is theirs, and this could all end tonight (or this morning). I've just looked throught the Grauniad's OBO report and England really did smite the ball in the first session. From 488 to 644 in 37 overs. That is a monstrous lash of the tail! And 644 is England's highest ever score in Australia. Even typing 644 feels, well, odd!

And Australia are now 198 for 7 after 63 overs. Here's the Grauniad account of the first wicket. It's as if the Aussies have given up.

What a shemozzle. What a total, abject farce. Hughes turns Swann through midwicket and sets off; they take one and then Watson trots leisurely back for a second, completely oblivious to the fact that Hughes has not moved. Pietersen and Prior do the rest. Both of them were ballwatching. England are happy as Larry; Watson is as happy as Larry David. What a daft way to get out, particularly because he was playing beautifully. In Guardian Towers, Smyth and Burnton have an impromptu cackle-off. That was a shocking run out.

It looks like they're going to have to finish this off tomorrow morning because they've taken the extra half hour but Siddle and Smith are being a bit too sticky. Let's see what Swann can do...

Excellent day, match, series, England!

End of play for today, but what a day it's been. Looking forward to watching the final hour or so tomorow

Play starts at 11:03 our time, which is odd...

They've survived. The eighth wicket stand has got Australia 42 runs, which is to their credit, but makes you wonder what happened earlier in the day.

At least they've stretched it to the fifth day. I wonder how many Aussie cricket fans will turn up to watch?

Head agrees, heart wishes for more.

Looks like we get the best of both, the Aussies havn't managed to put on a half decent innings, so happy days

Think we need to make the most of this, it's been a very long time and I think it'll be a long time before England are so dominant and perform so well in an Ashes series. This has been unprecidented.

Colly has retired from test cricket. A sound decision and thanks for everything you have done.

Indeed! He was a model professional cricketer, who gave the best he had, and played with an abundance of determination (to make up for any short-comings as an true Test batsman), good humour and modesty. He should have a few years in him as a one-day and 20/20 player (not least in the profitable IPL).

I'd be a lot more optimistic. Look at our team. We've got Morgan coming in to replace (the wonderful) Collingwood, and Swann, Anderson, Tremlett, Trott, Bell and even Strauss have a few years left in them and Finn, Morgan and Cook could be with us for a decade. The unanswerable question is where do Australia go from here? Put another way - how many of the Australian XI would get in to the England XI?

The team spirit that Flower and Strauss have created has shone through all this, when you remember the shambles that we were in the past. The bowling has outperformed all expectations , the batting has been more than solid and the fielding sensational.

I watched an interview with Glenn McGrath yesterday where they brought up his 5-0 Aussie whitewash prediction

Another great day for England, both with bat and ball!

The Australians are shell-shocked and will take a while to regain their confidence/arrogance again. They will need to blood a few more youngsters and get rid of the sub-standard ones.

Interesting to see that England have outshone Australia in every department, except for the wicketkeepers, where Haddin and Prior have been evenly matched: Haddin scored 360 at an average of 45 and Prior scored 252 at 50, but Haddin has only taken eight catches in comparison to Prior who (with three wickets still to fall) has taken 22!

Says a lot for our bowling and their batting!

Indeed! I remember the patriarchal Duncan Fletcher ruling the roost with a weak Nasser Hussein as captain! Not a lot of fun in that team!

And how good is it to see a bowler the size of Tremlett being able to bowl quickly and well, and at the same time, unlike that bloody mincing Duncan Pringle!

Bring on the Saffers!
