All cars to have airbags removed, and a ruddy great sharp spike in the middle of the steering wheel.
Seat belts to be made illegal.
A minimum engine size of a five litre V8. Drive half a mile to the shops and it'll cost you a tenner in fuel alone.
Caught speeding by 15 mph over the limit - the car is torched there and then.
Kill someone by dangerous driving - the car is torched after the driver has a hand superglued to it. Blunt saw to be provided.
There we go. Road chaos ended.
*congratulates self*

Difficult to set standards...so how about, "impound and crush any vehicle:
1) found parked on or driven on a public road without MOT or insurance or registered to someone without a valid license to drive it at the time of checking -simple registration plate check on database [Eire has both current VED and insurance discs on windscreen],
2) driven by someone over the speed limit by 10%,
3) driven by anyone over the current drink limit."

There that should cover it- buses and lorries and vehicles driven by a person but owned by someone else could be a small issue but who cares- shoot them [in front of their families].

A lot of the other suggestions in this thread are about punishment. They cause endless debate and really hard to make a reality. (I picked yours at random Archie)

The external speedo idea is just information, which has no adverse effects until you use that info. I am trying to think of a reason why somebody might say no to the idea and all I can come up with is something about a snitch and big brother society. Our land is already littered with speed cameras, flashing speed warning signs and speed bumps in an attempt so solve the speeding problem anyway.

If motor vehicles do all the speeding, lets stick the problem onto those vehicles.

How could I possibly make this idea happen ?

Seat belts to be made illegal.

Not quite. Compulsory for passengers, but illegal for drivers. No reason for everyone to die...

Also, burning cars is very bad for the environment, and wasteful. Cars to be given away, or given to screwdriver wielding boy scouts to be dismantled and made into other useful things.

The drivers could be superglued to stakes with fires lit round the bottom.

I'm glad you all like the idea.

It's born out of frustration that there are still too many drivers speeding in really stupid places like near schools, residential streets etc and they know the chances of being caught are slim. Away from fixed speed cameras, a lot of drivers know there is little chance of being caught, but with their speed on display, if any person takes offence to your anti-social driving they can take a picture and shame you, report you or whatever. Society can decide separately what to do with the information.

There is no way car manufacturers would put a speedo on the outside. It would scare buyers off.

On a somewhat more sensible note, I have been driving at some velocity on a French autoroute, and had a big sign flash up my reg number and speed, for all around me to read and disapprove of.
The public shaming was effective
I was testing the theory that the fastest car ever is a hire car...

The regulation will not be from society it will come from cars auto-restricting to the local speed limit. The technology already exists it is only a matter of time before max speeds of cars are controlled by someone or something that is not sitting in the vehicle.

My idea is to display the shells of smashed-up cars on the middle of big roundabouts with a notice of how many people were killed, etc etc.

I used to think this was a good idea but how many times have people driven slowly past a serious crash, had a good look at it and then driven away at high speed ?

Maybe a trip to the local mortuary and show 'em the results of these smashes or a child run over might slow them down ?
But then again it probably wont.

I normally avoid adverts but a Ford one caught my eye the other day. The car had a feature that recognised road speed limit signs and then put that information on the dash. That is very close to being able to control the max speed of the vehicle.

There was also the Nissan GTR on Top Gear in Japan which has the max speed of the car limited until the GPS knew it was at a race track. http://digitaljournal.com/article/250029

I already have the ability to call up any ship or aeroplane in the world and tell you exactly where it is, where it is coming from, where it is going and how fast it is going.

Therefore why not make the same black box compulsory in cars as well.
You speed, the fine can be deducted from your bank before you even get home.

I see where you're coming from!

I do think there should be a second chance,

The driver I saw kill a whole family had just one previous conviction for drink drive. If he'd been off the road first time round perhaps they'd still be alive and I and the rest of the bus queue who watched it wouldn't have the consequences etched on our brains for life.

Sorry Arch, but there are some offences where there's no justification for any second chances. Drink driving is just one of them.
