The Candyman

On his Radio 2 morning show Chirs Evans makes a big event of playing The Candyman by Sammy Davis jr.

Now I must admit to being a bit biast against Evans but whenever the track comes on think of it as an encouragement for people to comfort eat, get fat and have health problems.

Just to remind you, here is an extract of the song-

Oh, who can take tomorrow (who can take tomorrow)
Dip it in a dream (dip it in a dream)
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream
The Candy Man (the Candy Man)
Oh, the Candy Man can (the Candy Man can)
The Candy Man can
'Cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good
(Makes the world taste good)

(The Candy Man makes everything he bakes)
(Satisfying and delicious)
Talk about your childhood wishes
You can even eat the dishes

Now is this just me overreacting or do I have a point? I don't think the song should be banned or anything but to make it a weekly feature to play it is in my view possibly subjecting a vast number of people to the suggestion that all your problems go away by scoffing sweets.

I was just contemplating complaining to the BBC but then thought "is it just me" that sees this connection?

I thought it was his staple feel good / weekend tune - personally i immediately turn the radio off as I can't stand the tune, let alone the connotations

IIRC - he used to play Elvis singing The Wonder of You on a Friday evening every week and this might have been replaced with Happy Days at some stage

There was some discussion a few weeks back that they were going to change the regular song to something else - or keep it in - I guess they kept it in ;)

There's a horror film called the Candy Man, and though I've never seen it, the song makes me think of the film ;)

I think you're being over-sensitive. Would you wear flowers in your hair if you went to San Francisco just because you'd heard the song?

I think the song has a clearer message than most adverts around these days and they seem to work as wife and kids have filled the bathroom with all the stuff on the ads.

I watched Supersize v Superskinny and many issues of health arise from a suggestion of this sort.
