There's several of these dotted around Hamtunshire as ventilation for the Grand Union canal and also old railway tunnels on the Brampton Valley Way (Sustran 6)

As per mention of ventilation shafts in the old tunnels on the Brampton Valley Way, here's a pic of the bottom end of one I took during my ride through them in February 2021. Just managed to find them.. 👍

They closed the tunnels after I'd ridden through as it was considered dangerous if an icicle dropped off & hit someone 🤷‍♂️

Half Moon Woods
Between Heath & Kirkthorpe
Wakefield

The Half Moon was created with the coming of the railway to Wakefield, from the east, in the late 1830s

The north-eastern end of the path, exiting onto Half Moon Lane, behind Frieston Almshouse

This sign is along a compacted limestone access road that services the Archimedes Screw at Kirkthorpe Weir, on the River Calder (incorporates a link to the constructors of the hydro-electric generator)
It's opposite a foot crossing on the railway between Normanton & Wakefield - KirkGate
