Aye, things ain't what they used to be, even on the new-fangled t'internet.

I remember when it were all fields around here...

But seriously, I think the OP is right, and I notice the changes it a lot more on another special interest forum I'm on. There the issue is when more and more frequently people who've clearly never bothered to read anything on the forum just post threads demanding all kinds of things and get very narked when they don't get what they want immediately. It's like they expect other members are some kind of substitute for their inability to use a search engine...

A rather waspish observation but accurate in some instances and mostly accurate over in the forum frequented by folk with delusions of adequacy.

No name no pack drill.
Waspish

I haven't heard that since I was at school. I am going to try and get that into at least three conversations at work this week.

Although I am new here I have been around forums for a while, and I can't help but notice that there is a change.

In days gone by, forums used to attract people who had given consideration to the reasons for them joining, and to having searched the internet/other media to inform them.

Now it just seems that threads are started without consideration of searching either the forum or the internet, or is just "limited character" nonsense (twitter is to blame I suppose)<

And is there not enough pointlessness on Facebook that to avoid it here? e.g. "Hope you have the strength to overcome your inability to stop being a twat"

Yes, I think this particular meme is spreading, although I was hoping it was indicative of a fledgling instant support pseudo community, but now I think it is nothing more than fat @rsed dullards that can't be bothered to think for themselves.:headshake:

Can anyone help me? I'd like to know what is the best brand of absinthe to have for breakfast?

This, of course, no other will do.

It would be very dull if everybody researched before posting, think of all the helmet debates you would miss, or should I acknowledge other cyclist threads.

Which both renders it less damaging to the epithelial cells of the gullet and weak enough to use as an emergency fuel in my Trangia.

Internet forums are simply what has evolved because of the insistence that the web is the internet rather than the web being PART of the internet. The bits that the vast majority do not know about are still there but have been pretty much superceeded.

In particular, usenet and irc have been relegated to second class citizens, despite usenet with a good reader being way better than most web forums. IRC is gaining back some ground simply because you can have 6 chat windows going (or more) on one page without having to go through loads of different websites.

FTP is still there but runs in the background as that's the protocol that makes web downloads and uploads work. Although the days of massive ftp server lists have pretty much gone because of the file sharing protocols.

The anonymity available on usenet and irc is way more than anything on the web. How would a government know what you are getting if your connecting to a system that only send's in text in afganistan (for instance). It could be transmitting the worst kind of filth known to mankind and unless you actually have a packet sniffer then your stuffed in real terms. But back in the day before you could upload pictures/videos etc it was simply the best place to discuss anything at all. Email on a massive EPO boost.

Saw it and ignored it. The cold distilled stuff has me interested. I'm sending for a sample - 91% alcohol content just has to be investigated
