Pete, I would thoroughly recommend the film Bad Santa, if you haven't seen it treat yourself.

+1 Having remembered this, I'm now looking forward to the festivities!

Just like the Queen, Jesus has two birthdays.
An 'official' day - 25th December, and a 'real' birthday.

The jury is still out as to the precise 'real' date, but it could be late September on the Gregorian calendar.

It coincided with the census, which was arranged at the New Year in Hebrew, not Gregorian.

The 'official' day was set in late December to suppress the pagan 'Solstice festivities' when their New Year began.

I don't celebrate the 'official' day.

Couldn't have put it better myself....maybe....probably....

My friend babelfish said it meant this -

'But gibt' s something Elves or annuitant there?! That could be dangerous'

Cleared that one up!

Lol! I will leave it to Andy in Sig to translate my bad German ... and perhaps re-write it more fluently, complete with the jibe aimed in my general direction ...

Gibt's is a contraction that babelfish doesn't understand, or so it would seem! I am surprised it doesn't understand Rentier! I am unsure of my use of etwas in that sentence; I think I am translating litterally from the English and it doesn't read right in German. I do that sometimes, just to give my German friends a good laugh!

I love christmas time me:smile:

I go home, unplug the phone, make sure I've got plenty of tea, coffee and grub in and then spend the whole period reading books and playing music.

It's taken me a good ten years for people to understand that it's what I WANT to do after spending the whole year working 6 or 7 days a week running Cyclemagic and organising events/other people.

Last year I was pleased not to get a single card or present:biggrin:

I dont mind Christmas day too much* but it is the fact that the whole thing is the focus of attention for three whole months of the year that spoils it. Nothing else seems to require so much planning and attention as Christmas.

* I really hate it when we go to the inlaws and they have put the same decorations up in exactly the same place as they have for the last 20 years, I have a bit of a Groundhog Day moment.

Well it does depend on exactly what you're trying to say:

Aber gibt's etwas Elves oder Rentier da?! Das koennte gefaehrlich sein!

could be:

Aber gibt's doch Elfen oder Rentiere da? Das könnte gefährlich sein!

(But are there elves or reindeer there? That could be dangerous!)

Rentier also translates as "person of independent means".

I'm now surrounded by happy little elves co-workers putting up the office decorations and untangling fairy lights.

I refuse to help, until December 15th at the earliest.
