Nonsense! The world is mainly a good place. I'm 19, and I'm crossing Canada next year - Solo. Don't let fear of these things stop you. Allow the road to show you that you are able to overcome your fears.

Firstly Look on the http://www.crazyguyonabike.com site, there are plenty of peeps posting their stories on for routes similar as to what you propose. I would also point out there is a very small percentage of Land. on the Equator and what there is tends to be very hot and humid leech filled Jungle. Hence you find most travellers tend to travel either across Northern Europe/USA/Canada.
Cycling across South America and Africa the main landmasses that the Equator crosses means you have to cross the mountains, whereas If you travel north/South you tend in the main follow the Valleys.
Having myself Cycled down through Africa and South Asia it is not something to treat lightly.
As to bandits and thieves its the luck of the draw, and from my experiences, if you take sensible steps you will have no problems, sometimes it is the scary things which make a long tour exciting.

A quick look at the world map shows that there are 11 countries (excluding small islands):

Gabon
Congo
Dem. Rep. of Congo
Uganda
Kenya
Somalia
Sumatra
Borneo
Ecuador
Colombia
Brazil

Consult the net, Rough Guide books, and perhaps the Foreign Office to see which countries might be best to stay away from.

Failing that, just go to the North or South Pole and do a quick 360.

If you have done the coast to coast, that a good starter, you survived that ok, the Newcastle to London will depending on your planned route provide you with a variety of different road types to further build up your experience. the first major tour I did was from Cairo in Egypt to Kampala in Uganda, apart from a few places where stones were throw at me and a bit of excessive bureaucracy in the Sudan, I had only minor problems. I would recommend that you have your first tour solo in Europe, for a week or two, which will. build up your confidence to deal with any problems as they arise, because your proposed tour could be quite a test for you as a first Solo tour.
