The thing that strikes me about the video that's revived this thread is the gormlessness of many of the cyclists portrayed. For all that drivers could do better at checking to the rear before opening their doors, you'd think cyclists would be more aware of the fact that cars have doors that open, and adapt their riding accordingly. Do enough high speed close passes of stationary cars and sooner or later you will come a cropper. Don't do it kids! As a rule I'm one of the grumpiest of old men when it comes to bitching about elf 'n safety gorn mad (4 year old kids on scooters in the park with vast pink buckets on their heads - grrr) but this kind of behaviour does make me wonder about whether people shouldn't have to receive at least some kind of training before they're allowed out on the roads on what is, when all's said & done, a very vulnerable piece of technology.

Whislt I agree, we do often get moronic cycle lanes 100% in the door zone, and also motorists being agressive / beeping cyclists who stay outside the zone - especially where there is a lane.

If only they gathered in some sort of region or place, then you could visit it.

Also true. Hence 'many'. It's simply not possible to always be safe - but it's also true that many cyclists do themselves no favours. Look at the very first 'off' in that video. There was plenty of room for the cyclist to be far enough out to avoid a problem even if some idiot opened the door.

I think this is a great idea. There may be limitations in practice, but the fact that they are actually doing something to try and prevent doorings is IMO the mark of a thoughtful and proactive nation

I'm using my left arm atm to open car doors as the right hurts to push and stretch.
It does make you turn, but after 30 years of motorcycle riding I always double check.
Maybe all car lessons should include scooter riding?
Soon learn the value about looking then
