I kind of liked some early Simply Red, but they (he) got dire after that. I think the guy comes across as a pillock, but I have to say he has a very good voice....

If they think it's ok to "replace" Ronnie Lane with Bill Wyman, Glenn Matlock (ffs!) or "Flea" than I don't think it matters very much who does the singing.

Not to mention the fact that Rod Stewart was a replacement for the utterly irreplaceable and far more talented, Steve Marriott (RIP) - which was also when they changed their name from The Small Faces (an excellent mod band) to The Faces (turgid dad-rock)... IMHO of course! And it's more than 30 years since either did anything worth worrying about anyway - they could replace him with Celine Dion for all I care now!

It's like comparing War with Eric Burdon and the version of War that did Low Rider. Totally different bands.

Or indeed The Animals mks 1 and 2... of course, that's true. I just think that Steve Marriott's departure created two rather lesser bands than what had gone before. However, it's doubtful whether The Small Faces could have gone anywhere else, anyway... if they'd done the USA, they might have ended up an awful stadium rock band like The Kinks did in the 70s.

It's bizarre.

I think of how, in the 70's there were 'split off' & 'super' groups, Blind Faith and Rainbow spring to mind.
Now we're seeing a generation of 'super group' that basically constitute, owing to lack of original members, a kind of 'super covers band'.
It's what happened with the Blockheads after the death of Ian Dury and with Stiff Little Fingers when they had Bruce Foxton on bass.

TBH I think Matlock, for all his faults makes a more obvious choice of 'cheeky wide boy' bass player for the Faces than either Wyman or Flea.
Gawd, and to think of all the sh*te that went down when Ron Wood was approached to join The Stones and now they're getting Wyman.

I've been in and around the music business a long time and still find these stories quite mad.

BTW. Hucknall fronting the Faces, he has the voice to pull it off but I do wonder if they've just said that to rub Stewart's nose in it?

The Small Faces were much better than The Faces, but there are some decent Faces tracks - on Ooh La La for example. Of course Marriot went on to play in Humble Pie, and was solo before his unfortunate accident. I was working away when he appeared at The Blue Lamp, so I missed him. I was a bit gutted I never got to see him. I missed Ray Davies at the Beverley Playhouse too, but the thought of watching him play his greatest hits to a load of quietly seated, middle class pensioners, who had probably watched a Gilbert and Sullivan production there a week before, made it less of a blow.

Re: The Kinks in the Seventies. They are one of my favourite bands, but they did lose it. I once saw a recording of Davies putting his all into performing that Father Christmas song they did in the Seventies. I had to pretend I had dreamt it.

another sneaky Canuck attempt to export Celine Dion. How quickly you've become 'one of them'..
