To complement The finest acting in a film…..ever! thread, here's one for the small screen (unless you've got a bloody big one).

First up: The Sopranos, with the late great James Gandolfini & Co. Although these clips mostly centre around Gandolfini, Edie Falco (Tony's wife) was also phenomenal.

Note that my selections won't play in their embedded state, but direct you to youtube.

I know, a lot of crying women here; crying doesn't = great acting. These were moments of great emotional catharsis, so tears came with the territory. In the case of the aftermath of Tony's therapist's rape, it was one of the most powerful scenes in the entire series.

Having never seen Lovejoy, Deadwood was my introduction to Ian Mcshane. And what an intro.

Ended far too soon, but in a way, perfectly, as it left you wanting more.

Alec Guiness - Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. The greatest screen (large or small) actor of all time in his finest performance.

He doesn't seem to act or do anything at all really; yet you sit there enthralled as he silently cleans his glasses or sips coffee - and that's just the action scenes.

Is now a good time to say I think the worst was "Blake's Seven" ?

On reading the OP my mind immediately went to Worzel Gummidge.

Having tried to find a clip on YouTube however, I have decided to spare you all.

May I offer for your consideration Ian Richardson in the BBC version of House of Cards?

And of course Kevin Spacey in the U.S. Version too.

Spacey is the finest actor in any format alive today.

The Likely Lads. The finest example of contemporary history ever. Yes they were on TV albeit UK TV. Well that's what the DVDs I bought said.
