I'm not sure where the truth lies about Ashley being a terrible owner.
The fans loved him when he took over from John Hall who'd somehow become reviled despite sinking a large part of his personal fortune into the club.
Ashley ran the club like a business and refused to bury them in the tailspin of debt demanded by the 55,000 deluded screaming entitled jaw-dees who felt that success was their birth right despite not having won any silverware for decades.
He appointed the kind of popular high profile managers that the fans demanded (Keegan, Shearer and Benitez) who sometimes succeeded yet often failed (can't remember who was in charge when they finished 5th, I do remember that Benitez was somehow still a hero after taking them down).
His model of scouting players who appreciated in value during their stay is now the blueprint for sustainability for many other medium sized clubs. Alan Carr's Dad was mostly to be credited for that.
Throughout, he was always clear that the club was available for anyone else who could take it forward and eventually the Saudis did.
But in conclusion, yeah, Spurs are doomed.
It was Pardew who got them to fifth, and then Quarter Final of the Europa League. Unfortunately along with Ashley and Wise he was part of the perceived "Cockney Mafia" who fans wanted rid of.
All of what you say is true, and from a purely pragmatic perspective he was good a good owner. But he's not alone in being hated by Toon fans, popping up on here from time to time as a reason people won't buy from
Evans or Sports Direct.
The model of buying players to sell them at profit was, I think, the least popular thing he did. From a business perspective, sure. But for a football fan, they don't care about a price tag really, just achievements.
I used to get pelters as a Killie fan in my old office, "Who are they?", "Do you really support Rangers or Celtic?" and thoroughly enjoyed pointing out that I'd watched us lift both the Scottish Cup in 1997 and the League Cup in 2012. Also the small matter of us having won the League in 1965, so in living memory a more successful club.
Sadly I don't work there any more and have fallen out of touch with most of the chaps there so haven't been able to ask what it feels like to win a major trophy.
