I think you could argue that was also the English approach up until the last decade or two. We were incredibly slow to catch on to what the likes of France/Spain/Germany were doing.

Ironically, England were still producing some really special players. But on the continent they just couldn't understand why we hadn't built a team around Glen Hoddle, for instance. Too often they were considered "luxury players" rather than footballers that could take control of the game with their passing and vision - often the case in their own clubs as well.

Ron Greenwood was ahead of his time in that respect, getting his West Ham sides playing in a more continental way to what was the norm back in the sixties. Unfortunately back then defenders were allowed to kick lumps out of their opponents without sanction and all Greenwood could produce were cup teams. He would be right up the top in today's game.
