If you have the oomph to carry a lock then please do so. You might want to offer to double up with somebody who doesn't have one.

We do spill out on to the pavement, and we do keep an eye on the bikes, but leaving them loose probably wouldn't be sensible

No way am I not bringing a lock. I'd rather put up with the nagging of assorted peeps (who aren't carrying it...) on here than lose the bike & invalidate my insurance.

Susie and I carry one lock between two of us, and that does the trick.

I do think that if someone has a heavyish bike, and is going to find the trip a bit of a challenge, it would be nice for them to not carry a lock, and for one of us lock-carrying folk to double up. Think of it as a way of making a friend!

We have a couple of ancient Dawes Discoveries, Nomes, but you'll probably find a better offer elsewhere for the Whitstable run. You'd be perfectly welcome to borrow mine (we could lower the saddle) for the duration of your bikelessness, tho'

Or, then again........I do have a bike that doesn't get a lot of use.....

I have a cable lock that I'll take along. It's not what you'd call secure ie I don't leave my bike out anywhere as a general rule but it'll slow your average tealeaf down a bit. Happy to share it

Nomes,

Sorry to hear your bad news! Putting my working hat on I would suggest for the next few days you pay close attention to Gumtree and E Bay. The website www.bikeshed.co.uk is well worth a look as it pulls together all the photos of bikes for sale on auction sites and then takes you to the advert. If your bike was stolen in London and you do find it online then email cycletaskforce@met.police.uk and hopefully they can help? If you have the frame number of your stolen pride and joy that helps to prove without question your ownership. If like a lot of people this detail has been over looked can I ask when you replace it you record the frame number and register it for free with Immobilise and Bike Register.

Hopefully speak on Friday.

+1. I've got a similarly cheap cable lock, no problem to bring it along.

weather forecast looks great. North wind, which is no bad thing, a bit chilly, clear skies. The moon is full, so the light on the Thames will something else.

I'm pretty sure I won't be cycling back, so I may take you up on that offer. What time train are the tickets for?
