I find if you do a good deed you end up getting dumped on or the come back is a spiteful kick in the teeth. So in this instance I would check that I had not been billed for two books and kept quiet. It's their incompetence. Amazon is huge global multi-national making zillions in profit. If they want it they will contact you. I might give it to the local library or donate it to another kid/family studying French whose circumstances I knew weren't so prosperous shall we say.

I thought a lot of the books sold on amazon were sold by independent retailers who use amazon as a platform in the same way as ebay, I might be wrong though.

Amazon is an enormous retailing multinational which craps over workers' rights and much worse. Given that you are buying from them in the first place, the least you can do is reduce their profit margin by even the small amount you can when you get the chance. It's about all the space for 'resistance' that is offered to us sometimes. As User says, if this troubles your conscience, you can take the legal option of asking if they wish to make arrangements to take back the duplicate...

That's a serious allegation and the first I'd heard about it. (Although I tend to assume that all multinationals take as much advantage of workers as they can:sad: ).

As a frequent user of Amazon they have so far been good on the customer side of things.

There must be better ways of protesting than by keeping (and selling?) stuff that isn't yours.

A few regulars on here know that I found a very tasty bike in the river near my house last year. This was definitely my karmic reward for a good Christian life. So now I can stop sending back unsolicited goods, helping old folks across roads, donating to charity, visiting the sick, using my indicators and shopping for my neighbour and I can get on and shag my neighbour's wife, who I have so badly coveted for the last five years.

Similar quandary yesterday - bought a 320 Gb hard drive for my photos, and recieved a much more expensive 1Tb drive when I collected.

Pointed it out to be told I had ordered it.

SO went on to site, pointed out that online the order code numbers were correct for what I wanted and that the bigger drive was wrongly labelled.

They insisted I was wrong, so my conscience is free.

They have consistently faught workers' attempts to unionize, to the extent of employing special 'union-busting' companies and so on. Their business model depends on keeping costs very low so they aren't that keen on workers demanding better pay and condititions.

So in your book it's our duty to steal from them? Bizarre ethics indeed.

If it was a small retailer I'd contact them and leave them to arrange a return if they wanted to, if it's some mega-corp I'd keep quiet and give the extra copies to any other kids who'd needed them.

you did the right thing, Uncle Mort.

A similar thing happened me. My son wanted a camera before going to Afghan. I ordered one on the internet only for it to be lost in the bowels of DHL when their computer system went haywire. The shop quickly refunded the money, although the camera was "lost", which was really good of them, and we bought one a replacement in John Lewis.

Weeks later the camera arrived. I told the shop who had been paid out by DHL and weren't interested in getting back, so I told DHL. They never replied, and I kept the camera unopened for at least three months waiting for DHL to suddenly pitch up demanding it. Two years later, no DHL and I'm using the camera.
