Just finished The Godfather 1, 2 & 3, which someone lent me during the lockdown. Didn't think 3 was as good as the other two, and I thought 2 was too long, It's odd really, The Godfather is the archetypal Mafia movie, but it seems different to all the others.

Probably because it was one of the earlier "mafia" movies it had to set the back-story, which makes it feel a bit long-winded, whereas later "mafia" movies didn't have to set the back-story because a) by then it was by then an established "genre", and b) the Godfather had already done the hard work.

G2 is the best one IMHO.

Good later "mafia" movies of a similar ilk would include Goodfellas and Casino. Alternative personal viewpoints from other afficionados may be available ^_^

It wasn't the archetypal Mafia movie in it's own right - more that it created the blueprint that would later become the archetypal Mafia movie. Indeed, it became the blueprint for the Mafia themselves, who started to use the lingo that Mario Puzo had invented for the book.

I actually quite like III and think it underrated. It's a different style to the first two films, mapping out Michael Corleone's descent into insanity and demonstrating the futility of it all. However, compared to the masterpiece of the original film, and the close-run in terms of quality II, it isn't as good.

Parts 1 and 2 are splendid films.

I thought it was a shame that pt3 and Casino, which iirc came out at the same time and is a cracking film, meant that Miller’s Crossing got buried at the box office

ETA: inevitably, I didn’t rc - it wasn’t Casino, it was Goodfellas

I keep meaning to rewatch pt3. One of those films that couldn’t possibly have lived up to the weight of expectation pre-release

I wonder how they did talk? I think I'd go with the portrayal in "Goodfellas" where the f word was uttered something like three hundred and fifty times.

I think they all have their charms.

The first one I think is the best, it flows better and performances by Brando, Abe Vigoda and Al Lettieri and many others were great.

The second film I'm not so fussed by the story arc and compare and contrast, but Lee Strasberg is genius.

The third film has a cleverer story than is made out with a better cast than is often said. I think it's just people tend to react more negatively to this sort of film made and set years later as is the case in other franchises.

They are even better the second time round. You see more of what’s going on.
But I agree that the first one is the best
