and upgrading bikes is that you always end up with boxes of parts which will "come in useful one day"

My youngest offspring (9 y.o.) is rapidly growing out of his 20" wheel MTB and wants a "pavement bike" (he's not allowed on the road yet, except when it's very quiet and closely supervised)

I started looking at various options....couldn't find anything within my budget, but in preparation I had a clearout and took to the local recycling centre some smaller trikes and 12" & 14" wheel BSOs that were handed down from his siblings and that he has now outgrown.

There I found a half decent frame ...... with an utterly knackered drive train and rear wheel beyond repair.
£25 for a new wheel and similar amount for new tyres & tubes - then everything else from the box of bits....

I'm hoping he doesnt want drop bars & STI's on it before he outgrows it!

Can't believe that was only 18 months ago!
The little tyke has already outgrown that blue bike ... which almost inevitably was named "stig of the dump".

So ... off Ebay hunting again the other week and came up with a tatty old no-name steel 19" frame..£36 !
Sold the old 26" steel wheels off it, and the mudguards, - which gave enough to buy some nice tyres to be fitted to some spare 700c wheels I had kicking around, new bar tape, cables, chain and a tin of paint ! The rest was from the "box of bits" .
