It's all pretty subjective - my favourite book when I was really young was a thing called The Pirate's Tale, written by a kid, really weirdly illustrated and they all die at the end. It isn't in print any more. Then the Moomin books. Then The Hobbit and The Changes series by Peter Dickinson.
Well that's my day ruined, can not remember the name of my favourite book from when I was a kid and now will be spending the whole day banging my head against the wall trying to remember the title, I can see the cover illustration in my head!
My own childhood was too long ago. I think we read heiroglyphs and entrails back then. My children (when small) liked these:
Where the Wild Things Are.
Various Dr. Seuss titles.
A Jez Albourough series of stories about a boy and his teddy and a real bear in the woods ("It's dark and horrible in there"). The bear ends up with their Blueberry Pie.
I thought the Swallows and Amazons books were the best; they caught my imagination and for years I was obsessed with the idea of boating around on Windermere. Maybe that's why nowadays when I do go I always hire a skiff and go for a row around Belle Island.
AA Milne.... 'Now we are six', which I got for my birthday when I was 6 just before we set off on holiday.
I would have said 'The House at Pooh Corner' and 'Winnie-th-Pooh' which were part of the set but I left them at my aunty's house in Bristol on the way back from Devon before I'd read them and she never posted them back. I don't hold grudges.... Finally bought them for my two when they were small.
I loved Enid Blyton as a kid. I must've read most of her stuff, and that's going some. She wrote absolutely loads
Probably read every pony book going too
