Poor literature I know, but Willard Price Lion Aventure, Elephant Adventure and countless others.

I thought the Swallows and Amazons books were the best; they caught my imagination and for years I was obsessed with the idea of boating around on Windermere. Maybe that's why nowadays when I do go I always hire a skiff and go for a row around Belle Island.
I never read Swallows & Amazons as a kid but I really enjoyed reading it to mine when they were small.

When I was about eight I suppose my Dad came back from a day in town (Oxford) and summoned me downstairs. I remember standing on the stairs and looking down at him. In his hand he had a red cloth-bound book. He stammered out something awkward like "Er.... I think it's about time you started reading something a bit more grown up!" and handed me the book, which was Biggles in the Jungle by Captain WE Johns. Of course I loved it and went on to read all the Biggles books. That was the only time I can remember my Dad actually giving me anything or expressing any interest in my development, apart from tutting at my bad school reports.

Anyway, when I worked in a special needs school, I always liked 'The Tiger who came to tea', as the copy we had had furry bits on the illustrations of the Tiger, a lovely addition to have!

I have read this to my son almost every day for the last year, along with Where the Wild Things Are and, more recently, The Cat in the Hat. ^_^ He also like Tomi Ungerer's books a lot (Moon Man, The Three Robbers and Crictor, in particular). I love Ungerer's style, and he's also quite interestingly political...

Sadly, all I can remember about fiction as a child is being bored rigid by the "classics". I was more likely to have my nose in the Ladybird nature books or similar.

I used to save up my pocket money to buy a Ladybird Book when I could.... still got the one about Birds, which is why I can remember all about Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers and Lapwings [aka Green Plover or Peewit ... because of it's call, see still got it]. Ladybird Books were [are?] wonderful].
