Clothing. You should wear

  • a cycle helmet which conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and securely fastened
  • appropriate clothes for cycling. Avoid clothes which may get tangled in the chain, or in a wheel or may obscure your lights
  • light-coloured or fluorescent clothing which helps other road users to see you in daylight and poor light
  • reflective clothing and/or accessories (belt, arm or ankle bands) in the dark

White trainers are essential....

Note that none of it says MUST, so it is just one of the sillier recommendations of the HC...

Turning left

182

Use your mirrors and give a left-turn signal well before you turn left. Do not overtake just before you turn left and watch out for traffic coming up on your left before you make the turn, especially if driving a large vehicle. Cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users in particular may be hidden from your view.

Surely it should be "You MUST not overtake just before you turn left" law bla bla.

Rule 182 messageboard gold of which everybody ignores.

Interesting to note that in the 'correct' example the bike also appears to have spoke reflectors added?;)

Also interesting to note that although the cyclist has gone to all this effort, including wearing different shoes, a change of t-shirt to a lighter colour seemed to be a step too far...;)

By wearing a helmet he is in fact hiding his very reflective forehead, thus increasing the risk of hitting a low bridge. Tsk, tsk.

IIRC the previous version of the HC had a different piccy that there were differing opinions on which I'm sure we could spend a great deal of time arguing over. I think this is a moderate improvement as at least the picture seems to distinguish between dark blue and the previous pic where bright light blue was a no no. It still falls into the trap of light colours though.
