Hippos kill more people than lions or crocodiles, they're pretty dangerous. They're aggressive and have teeth the size of beer cans! Add the fact that they can run faster than you and you're basically screwed if you piss one off!

Yeah but as the old joke goes, I only need to run faster than you.

I HATE seeing other animals eating other animals alive! It REALLY does my make skin crawl!

Must be something from my primeval past!

If it helps, they are unlikely to be actually eating it - hippos are herbivores. They're just attacking it to see it off.

I swear that that hippo had the croc halfway down its throat in the picture I saw! That's certainly one way to see it off!

I'll remember that in future- I didn't eat ALL the cake, I was just seeing it off!

There is evidence, including this film, of them occasionally being omnivorous. But whether it's a specific adaption to drought, etc, I'm not sure.

But there is no doubting the fact that they are mean, bad tempered animals and of all the critters in Africa, they commanded my utmost respect. But it was quite amusing to see something so powerful and dangerous could be kept out of the garden by quite a small steep sided trench. A bit like darleks and stairs.

I know which pic you mean, but I think it's just the angle and the hippo has it's jaws round the croc's middle from the side...

In that case I'll give myself a good 20 yards before pissing one off.
