I've searched the forum and am a little surprised to see that nobody is talking about the first part of The Hobbit trilogy. I've always enjoyed reading Tolkien and thought Peter Jackson did a pretty good job with the Lord of the Rings trilogy but when I heard The Hobbit was going to be made as a trilogy I had some reservations, enough reservations not to bother going to see the film until last night.

I thought it was great! I was quite impressed with the backwards continuity and the extra bits added to the story kinda made sense to me.

I've written a bit more of a review on my blog but I'd love to know what everyone else thought of the film. Please post on Cycle Chat though; I don't want to steal any traffic

The Hobbit - a slapdash review from a numpty...

It was mostly great although I thought they overdid the literal cliff-hangers and some of the scenes using CGI were milked for all they were worth.

The troll scene was excellently repulsive IMO.

I took kid 1 to see it last week, really enjoyed it. I read it about 35 years ago so had to catch back up a bit, we're re-reading it at the moment, few pages each and out-loud which is quite fun. The interesting bit is how PJ has taken what is essentially a page in Tolkien's book and turned it into half an hour of viewing, it's not strung out and weak for that but I was wondering what it would be like if it was 1 film, would it be too much into 2 or 3 hours?

We took the youngest (6) to see it the first weekend it was out. We all loved it. He's now reading the book - result.

Mine's 9 and I thought some of the scenes were a bit gruesome but kids like all that nonsense and she loves the Horrible Histories too and nothing is more gory and blood splattered than real-life.

I liked it. Didn't think it was too long at all. I didn't bother seeing it in 3D though.

I'm yet to see anything in 3D, I was shocked enough that it cost us over £9 each to see it in two dimensions.

I tried reading the hobbit when I was about 14, but it really wasn't my sort of thang... all my mates were reading it, and it was the source of much conversation etc. I just couldn't get on with it... thus I never graduated onto LOTR, and have never seen the films. I'm strangely proud of that fact. :becool:

A Hobbit thread was started in Entertainment Chat Andrew, but there's more response here.

I found the film slow to get going but once up to speed really enjoyed it. It's not essential but I think it would be helpful to have seen the LOTR first as the characters in Hobbit link in.

I think LOTR was definitely something you could get more from if you'd read the book, especially when it comes to understanding some of the characters' motivations, but I thought the Hobbit was just a romp!
