Funnily enough i did just that last night. Riding home about 8pm I was on an unlit country road, no other traffic, & as I was riding past a small wind farm I turned my front light off & enjoyed the moonlight. Not fussed either way about wind farms, but last night in the moonlight it was rather enchanting

When I was a scout we were discouraged from using torches at night on the grounds that you can only see what the torch is pointing at, whereas if you wait for your eyes to adjust to whatever light there is, you can see everything. This is on night walks and the like, mind...not on two wheels.
When I'm camping and wandering around the campsite at night time I always do the same. As you say if you use a torch everything not illuminated by it seems pitch black, whereas without a torch you can see much better all around you.

Not tried it cycling though.

My ride last night didn’t disappoint, and was made the more dramatic by the orange glows of distant bonfires. I did about 12 miles across country, and although the villages were busy with people returning from firework displays by car and on foot, there were still enough deserted rural stretches where the moonlight alone lit up the road, and I could enjoy the magic undisturbed

I once tried riding with my eyes closed, but it only lasted for 3 seconds before I ended up with a mouthful of gravel.
Errrr ..... Why?
