I now have in mind, some ghastly pub-quiz question, on the lines of:

"Which British seaside pier burnt down on the day before the LHC started up?"
(better make it a multiple-choice to give contestants a dog's chance...)

No, on second thoughts....

OK back to the LHC. In what way has it affected our lives since it started popping protons - physical or otherwise? Any ideas?

So the LHC clearly has some protective effect against pier fires. Amazing!

I had a punct*re on the day it started up. Now, I'm not saying there's a connection, but you never know.
It was a very small punct*re...

The type of black hole that the LHC can produce, will start off being very small. I reckon that's what caused it.

Mind you, it will get bigger....

Well, that could be very useful! They should beuild more. Could they adjust it to prevent other sorts of fires too? Is there much of a problem, for example, with other seaside structures catching light? Whelk stalls? Fortune teller's tents? Teacup rides?

I was thinking today actually, how it could be funny to write a spoof news article about how the LHC hasn't caused pier fires. Pete's position as an astronomer would lend scientific credibility....

One of the major spin-offs of the NASA space programme was the non-stick crochet hook.

The crochet hook had to be non-stick as it was used for nefarious purposes... in the weightless conditions they had nothing to push against.

You pulling folk's legs there marinyork?

I read it through and boy oh boy did I feel inadequate

No. I heavily recommend it. I share Penrose's insane optimism that people can get a lot out of the book. There are plenty of things I don't know even though I've studied a lot.
